Media and Broadcasting

Simpson Grierson has one of the foremost media, broadcasting and communications practices in New Zealand. We have acted for Television New Zealand news and current affairs for many years.

We are regularly consulted by other branches of the media on high profile media law cases. We also act for individuals and corporate entities on plaintiffs' claims.

We have vast experience in preclearance issues, defamation, Broadcasting Standards, censorship, New Zealand Bill of Rights, contempt, suppression and court reporting, intellectual property, privacy matters and advertising issues. We have a strong dispute resolution base to our practice, with lawyers experienced in litigation and other forms of dispute resolution.

We also offer commercial advice to the industry and work closely with our Corporate, Employment, Health, Safety and Environmental, and Communications and Technology groups. Together we advise on joint venture arrangements, licensing, international negotiations, employment issues and disputes, and technology issues.

Our media, broadcasting and communications experts deliver seminars and produce compliance programmes for journalists, producers and all those in the business of communicating. Our seminars and programmes provide updates on legal developments and changes in the law.  We are dedicated to translating legal principles into workable, practical advice.

We undertake a variety of work, including:
