Simpson Grierson is proud of its role as a good corporate citizen.  Not only do our numerous community service initiatives have a "feel good" factor for all those involved but they are having a genuine impact in our community.

Some examples of initiatives taken by Simpson Grierson include:

  • Goodbooks NZ – Simpson Grierson Chairman Rob Fisher is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Goodbooks. Goodbooks aims at creating positive connections between commercial worlds and wider, less advantaged, communities. Basically, it's like Amazon with a social conscience as 100% of the profit on every sale goes to Oxfam New Zealand to support their work against poverty and for social justice.

  • Simpson Grierson has been a sponsor of Youthline since 2004.  We've helped Youthline to implement an innovative new SMS text message service for youths (TXT 0274youths) and in 2005, Simpson Grierson sponsored Youthline's redevelopment of its website. The new services provide additional avenues of support for young people using their preferred mediums of choice – the internet and cellphones.

  • Major sponsorship of the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki – Simpson Grierson's partnership with the Auckland Art Gallery spans more than 14 years.  Simpson Grierson has twice been awarded the Creative New Zealand prize for bravery for sponsorship of the arts.

  • In 2006, Simpson Grierson sponsored the Auckland Art Gallery's "Tribute: Visual Artists Celebrated by the Foundation of New Zealand" exhibition from 1 July to 20 August 2006 in the New Gallery.  Simpson Grierson is also supporting the Walters Prize by sponsoring the international judge for the event.  The Walters Prize was established to promote interest in New Zealand contemporary art, making it more accessible to a potentially larger and more culturally diverse public.

  • Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind - In 2003 and 2004 we formally sponsored the Foundation's Guide Dog Programme, sponsoring two guide dog puppies named "Simpson" and "Grierson". This initiative was undertaken as an alternative to producing the firm's traditional season's greeting cards which numbered in the thousands. The firm continues to support the foundation with Chairman Rob Fisher providing free advice when necessary as a member of their advisory board.

  • Wellington Art Gallery – In July 2005 Simpson Grierson was delighted to partner with Wellington City Gallery in its sponsorship of Small World, Big Town: Contemporary Art from Te Papa, an exhibition in partnership with the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.   Small World, Big Town has been jointly curated by City Gallery Wellington and Te Papa, and includes contemporary works by 28 New Zealand artists, drawn from the Te Papa visual art collections.  The theme of the 2005 exhibition underlines a shift in artists’ thinking in recent decades, from concerns about national identity and nationhood to the ideas and impacts of globalisation, a would-be regionalism and the importance of individual experience.

  • Replanting Motutapu and Motuihe Islands – Simpson Grierson staff groups have taken part in the revegetation projects by helping with the planting of native trees.

  • Building a Habitat for Humanity – our staff have participated in projects designed to keep our community beautiful, including landscaping for the "Habitat for Humanity" house in Manurewa, Auckland, in conjunction with the Helensville Riverside Heritage Society.   In Wellington, staff planted more than 1000 trees at Kakaho Stream to help rebuild the fragile stream eco-system destroyed by development in the area.

  • Supporting low decile schools - Simpson Grierson staff have taken children on fieldtrips and been involved in weekly reading groups with students during lunchtimes.

  • A number of our partners serve on school boards, charitable trusts and sporting organisations (some national) on a voluntary basis.

  • Simpson Grierson lawyers undertake pro bono legal work for charities and not-for-profit organisations.

  • Other charities and not-for-profit organisations Simpson Grierson supports: the Cancer Society, Womens' Refuge, the SPCA, Children's Charity Book Fair, Disabled Children's travel to Disneyland, Burns Unit – South Auckland Burns, Life Flight Trust, Wellington City Mission, OXFAM, and emergency relief funds.
