Are there any security requirements for the storage of personal data under New Zealand law?

Security requirements for the storage of personal information are generally governed by the Privacy Act 1993. The Act provides that agencies which hold personal information must ensure that the information is protected, by such security safeguards as it is reasonable in the circumstances to take, against:

  1. loss;
  2. access, use, modification, or disclosure, except with the authority of the agency; and
  3. other misuse.
