Peter won the title ahead of finalists from three other top New Zealand law firms at the recent Australasian Legal Business Deals of the Year Awards in Melbourne.
Simpson Grierson partner takes title Simpson Grierson is proud to announce that Partner and Simpson Grierson Corporate Advisory Group Head Peter Hinton is New Zealand's legal Dealmaker of the Year for 2004.
Peter Hinton was awarded the title ahead of finalists from other top New Zealand law firms at the inaugural Australasian Legal Business Deal of the Year Awards in Melbourne at the weekend.
The Australasian award recognises his impressive range of corporate advisory work during 2004. His portfolio includes mergers and acquisitions, corporate structuring and financing, joint ventures, competition law, capital raising and several complex and high profile initial public offerings. The IPOs he worked on included the floats of children's wear retailer Pumpkin Patch and Gullivers Travel Group. Peter was the lead New Zealand counsel in the largest M&A transaction of the year – Origin Energy's takeover of Contact Energy (as recorded by Thomson Financial). In addition he advised New Plymouth District Council on the sale of its cornerstone shareholding in Powerco, as a part of Prime Infrastructure's high profile bid for Powerco and also acted for Tenon on the partial takeover offer by Rubicon Forests.
In Peter's acceptance speech at the awards he said he was honoured to be selected as New Zealand Dealmaker of the Year and thanked the ALB magazine for hosting the awards. Peter acknowledged the skills and talent of the Simpson Grierson Corporate Advisory team, noting that 2004 represented a very busy and successful year for the team.
Simpson Grierson Chairman Rob Fisher says the firm is extremely proud of Peter's win, both for him personally and for the firm as a whole. "We are delighted with this result as it is a reflection of a buoyant 12 months for the firm."
The ALB Deal of the Year Awards are a feature of the legal calendar in Asia, but this is the first time a separate event has been held for the Australian and New Zealand markets. ALB describes the Dealmaker of the year as the individual who "has been the outstanding rainmaker in the New Zealand legal services industry over 2004."
