Shan is a Partner in the Employment Law Group and has specialised in this area throughout her legal career.  She is experienced in working through all range of issues for employment relations in the workplace.  Within that is an expertise in dealing with collective bargaining issues and union-related issues, be that at the bargaining table or behind the scenes.

In addition to her New Zealand experience, Shan worked for one of London's largest city law firms, specialising in employment law. Through this, Shan gained high level experience in employment issues over a number of different jurisdictions for all forms of transfers of undertakings, senior executive issues (from international secondments to terminations) and restructuring.

Shan has in-house experience - managing a restructuring and redundancy process for 800 employees over four different sites.  She has assisted a number of clients with change management projects.

Shan is experienced in mediation, and has also appeared at all levels of court from the Employment Relations Authority to the Court of Appeal.

Areas of particular note, within the sphere of employment law, include industrial relations, health and safety, privacy and discrimination.


  • Successfully obtaining and executing Anton Piller search for Geneva Finance of a competitor to retrieve misappropriated intellectual property
  • Advising Spotless Services on collective bargaining in the public health sector - which included test cases in the Employment Court on the issue of a MECA claim and rights to paid union meetings
  • Advising Spotless Services in relation to transfer of staff in a contracting out situation in the public health sector and a challenge to the tender process
  • Connex Auckland's employment issues relating to commencing operations in New Zealand and taking over operation of the Auckland Rail passenger service
  • Personal grievance claims for Fisher & Paykel Appliances relating to time recording and overtime system, and another concerning misappropriation of intellectual property
  • Ohai Mining's issues in relation to a national mining industry collective agreement
  • Telecom's successful defeat of personal grievance claims brought in the Employment Court in relation to the closure of a consulting business within the Advanced Solutions business
  • Successfully represented SKYCITY in a challenge to the restructuring of its Security Department, as well as a number of personal grievances concerning misconduct dismissals. 
  • Advising SKYCITY on collective and individual bargaining issues
  • Inaugural case on fixed term employment agreements under the Employment Relations Act, representing University of Auckland
  • Management and negotiation of a number of senior executive terminations
