Tim is a Partner in Simpson Grierson's Litigation Department.

He advises and acts in all forms of commercial and public law disputes. He has appeared in the District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal, the Waitangi Tribunal and in commercial arbitrations on a variety of different claims.

Tim has been in practice since 1995. He rejoined Simpson Grierson in 2001 after three years in England, where he undertook postgraduate study at the University of Oxford and worked at a leading London litigation firm.


  • Acting for Fugro-Geoteam in declaratory proceedings brought with ExxonMobil against the Crown regarding entitlement to seismic data relating to the Great South Basin
  • Acting for Tap New Zealand in judicial review proceedings against the Crown relating to the refusal to award a petroleum exploration permit in respect of a priority in time application for acreage in the Canterbury basin
  • Acted for OMV New Zealand in High Court and Court of Appeal litigation between the joint venture partners of the Maui, Western Platform and Pohokura gas fields about who should perform the role of operator of the fields
  • Acted for OMV New Zealand in High Court and Court of Appeal litigation between the Maui Mining Companies relating to the provision of open access to the Maui pipeline
  • Acted for BP Oil in litigation against Origin Pacific Airways and Robert Inglis arising out of Origin's compromise of its debts
  • Acted for New Zealand Guardian Trust in an application for directions regarding the treatment of unclaimed redemption and interest payments to missing holders of capital notes and bonds
  • Acted for the Lakeview liquidators in High Court proceedings regarding the voidability of payments by receivers to unsecured creditors prior to the liquidation
  • Acted for the Lakeview liquidators in an application under section 35 of the Receiverships Act 1993 to remove the Lakeview receivers
  • Acted for BP Oil against Vege Shack in an application under the Arbitration Act 1996 for leave to appeal against an award of Sir Ian Barker QC
  • Acted for BP Oil in resisting application by liquidators of Wilder Transport requiring disclosure of documents
  • Acted for New Zealand Rugby Football Union in the "Invincibles" jersey litigation against Canterbury International Limited
  • Acted for Capital & Coast District Health Board before the Waitangi Tribunal in WAI 967:  The Wellington Hospital Endowment Lands claim
  • Acted for South Taranaki District Council in defending judicial review proceedings of the Council's decision to sell Egmont Electricity to Powerco
  • Acted for Local Government New Zealand on its amicus brief in the Woolworths case regarding the administrative law principles that govern rating determinations
