Based in Auckland, James Hassall is a Senior Associate in the Resources and Infrastructure Department practising in local government and resource management law.

He advises both public and private sector clients on a range of local government, resource management and environment, waste and contaminated land and building issues.  James appears regularly before local authorities and in the District, Environment and High Courts.

James maintains an interest in sustainability/green buildings, corporate social responsibility and climate change.

• Involvement as part of the team which successfully obtained resource consents for the Hampton Downs Landfill in the North Waikato
• Defence of United Environmental Limited (now Transpacific Industries Limited) in the Environment and District Courts relating to contamination on their site
• Appeal in the Environment Court on behalf on NZ Fire Service against decision of a local authority declining consent for a new fire station
• Defence in the Environment Court of Papakura District Council's decision to grant a resource consent to the NZ Kennel Club
• Opposition in Environment Court on behalf of neighbours to a proposal to subdivide part of rural Queenstown
• Prosecution on behalf of Papakura District Council in relation to dumping of car parts and fill in flood zone
• Defence in the High Court against an application for judicial review of a decision by Rodney District Council
• Defence in the Environment Court of Auckland City Council's plan change for St Heliers town centre
• Defence in the Environment Court of a decision of the Rodney District Council declining consent to a proposal to establish a railway station themed cafe/restaurant/function centre
