Gerald Lanning is a senior associate in Simpson Grierson's Local Government & Environment Group. Before joining Simpson Grierson Gerald worked for another national law firm and then as a policy advisor for the Ministry of Transport where he was responsible for drafting cabinet papers and briefing Ministers and government officials.
His primary area of practice involves advising on the full range of resource management and local government law with a focus on large infrastructure projects, land transport policy and funding and Maori/Treaty of Waitangi issues. He regularly appears before local authorities and the Environment Court and provides advice on a range of legislation including the Resource Management Act 1991, Public Works Act 1981, Land Transport Management Act 2002 and the Local Government Act 2002.
Gerald primarily acts for local authorities including Auckland City Council, North Shore City Council, Rodney District Council, Tauranga City Council and also acts for other public bodies such as Metrowater Limited and Transit New Zealand.

- Obtaining designations, coastal permits and consents for reclamations for Tauranga City Council's Tauranga Second Harbour Crossing
- Advising on project development and consenting issues for Auckland City's Eastern Transport Corridor
- Obtaining coastal and discharge permits for Rodney District Council's Army Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Advising Auckland City on the review of the Hauraki Gulf Islands District Plan
