The cornerstone of the New Zealand Land Registration System has always been that for every property in the country, Land Information New Zealand has defined and recorded ownership and all interests on a hardcopy "title" (effectively your property ownership papers). Each title was capable of inspection and possession of the hardcopy title was a fundamental requirement to effect any sale or mortgage of land.
