Tourism & Hotels

Tourism is a fundamental contributor to New Zealand's economy and way of life, contributing close to 10% of gross domestic product (GDP) and employing nearly one in ten New Zealanders. It is a $50 million a day industry with two million tourists visiting each year and enormous growth potential.

Key players in the industry, including hotels, motels, resorts, golf clubs, lodges, restaurants, wineries, breweries and entertainment promoters, face unique employment, property, contract, regulatory and tax issues. They need advice from a law firm that understands the complex issues they encounter and has the experience to provide fast and effective commercial advice.

Simpson Grierson understands the tourism business and our specialists have extensive experience in providing solutions to the challenges faced by clients throughout New Zealand and the Pacific.

We negotiate and advise on service and management agreements, acquisition and financing issues, and handle the full range of other operational issues. This includes helping owners and operators buy, sell and lease property, prepare governing documents, as well as handling the tax, zoning, construction and environmental concerns. We also resolve any disputes that arise, from existing agreements to work-outs of financially distressed properties.

We also assist with: intellectual property and brand protection; liability issues for the sale of food and beverages; health & safety issues; liquor licensing and other regulatory issues; gaming issues and all sales and marketing activity including events, sponsorships and promotions.

Simpson Grierson is the co-host of the annual New Zealand Hotel Industry Conference (NZHIC), which was established in 2007.
