M&A and capital markets International investment Government reform and public policy

Welcome to Market Insights, our wrap-up of trends and developments in New Zealand’s M&A and equity capital markets.

2017 has proved to be a testing year for advisers trying to get deals across the line quickly. M&A deal flow was subdued in the early part of the year with modest  private equity activity and significant rejections from regulators. However there seems to have been a bounce of activity in the latter part. With tight credit conditions, leveraged deals have proved more challenging, but good quality deals are still finding financing.

We have continued to see debate around the future options for the NZX, exacerbated by the proposed consolidation of its three markets and only one real initial public offering this year.

Despite this context, we remain optimistic for the next year, with an expectation that strong  economic growth is set to continue in New Zealand. This should translate through into our M&A markets in due course.

Please get in touch if you would like to discuss any of the issues raised in Market Insights.
