Simpson Grierson news and events

Simpson Grierson’s construction team played a key role as legal advisor assisting Watercare to complete the procurement stage of the Central Interceptor project - a legacy $1.2 billion development for Auckland that will service the city for the next 100 years and beyond.

Last month, Watercare and the Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture celebrated signing the contract to construct the Central Interceptor. When completed in 2025, it will reduce the number of overflows at several central city beaches and waterways by more than 80 per cent.

Simpson Grierson’s team, led by partner Mike Weatherall and senior associate Sonia Vitas, has been involved in the project since May 2018 and successfully delivered the RFP document to schedule, for release to market of the Central Interceptor project procurement.

Key decisions made at early stages of the procurement planning, surrounding the adoption of a simple procurement process, included approaching the market with a full complete design and using a well understood and recognised international standard form contract (FIDIC Red Book).

These steps ensured that the project was attractive to both international and New Zealand based contractors, and what followed was a robust and competitive process that resulted in the Contract Price coming significantly under budget.

The Simpson Grierson team also included senior associates Genevieve Cox (construction) and Laurette Barnard (banking), as well as solicitor Jack Hayashi (construction).
