Connecting Canterbury: Strengthening Infrastructure for Growth is a White Paper written by Simpson Grierson in partnership with Infrastructure New Zealand. It draws on pan-industry engagement with public sector, private sector and iwi leaders across the region.

It sets out a bold, practical programme for coordinated, long-term infrastructure investment. One that draws on Canterbury's world-class post-earthquake recovery experience and applies it to the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Canterbury is New Zealand's fastest growing region and a cornerstone of its economic performance. Its freight corridors, port and airport connections, water networks and digital systems support agriculture, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, tourism and exports. Not just for the South Island, but for the nation.

The Paper identifies five priority areas:

  1. Replacing and future-proofing bridges and culverts
  2. Improving transport connectivity
  3. Strengthening lifeline resilience and climate readiness
  4. Implementing alternative funding and delivery models
  5. Collaborating on whole-of-life asset management

What our experts say

"Canterbury has everything it needs to lead the country on infrastructure: the talent, the track record, and now a clear roadmap. The funding tools exist, the delivery models have been proven, and Canterbury has already demonstrated what coordinated action looks like at scale.

“This White Paper isn't a wish list; it's a practical blueprint built with the people who own, operate and fund these assets every day. If we move together, Canterbury won't just keep pace with its growth. It will set a new national standard for how regions plan and invest in their future."
