Ashton Welsh

Ashton is a consultant and manages the firm's Sports, Entertainment and Venues team.

Ashton has advised international sports federations, rightsholders, NGOs, national sports organisations, sports marketing agencies, media/production companies and event promoters in various jurisdictions around the world. He has also negotiated numerous broadcast and media deals, and been involved in a number of 'start-up' sports properties.

New Zealand

  • Undertook Feasibility Study for Sport New Zealand (Crown agency) to consider and propose options for a Complaints Management and Dispute Resolution System for the New Zealand sports sector; which ultimately led to the establishment of a sector-wide “Sport and Recreation Complaints and Mediation Service”
  • Legal adviser to New Zealand Olympic Committee, Paralympics New Zealand, New Zealand Rugby, New Zealand Cricket, New Zealand Rugby League, Hockey New Zealand, Yachting New Zealand, Netball New Zealand, Baseball New Zealand, Auckland Tuatara Baseball, and Tennis Auckland (ASB Classic)
  • Legal advisor to the local organising committees of the FIH Hockey Pro League, and49/49FX/Nacra 17 World Championships 2019 (as well as the FIFA U20 Football World Cup 2015, FIH Women's World League Final 2017, the Rugby League World Cup 2017 and the U19 Cricket World Cup 2018)
  • Legal advisor to a number of stadia and venue operators/managers throughout New Zealand including Regional Facilities Auckland (the largest owner/operator of stadia in New Zealand)


  • Developed and managed the Volvo Ocean Race's bid/host city procurement process for the 12th and 13th editions of the race
  • Developed and managed the International Equestrian Federation's bid/host city procurement process for the FEI World Equestrian Games and the FEI European Championships
  • General Counsel for a Swiss-based sports agency that launched a pan-European ice hockey league (Champions Hockey League)
  • Venue Manager / TV Production Manager for the staging of the Champions Hockey League and NHL exhibition ice hockey games in Switzerland, Slovakia and Russia
  • Head of Legal for a UK media company exploiting the commercial rights for the world's most successful game show, "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" (with the TV format rights being licenced in over 100 countries)
  • Sponsor & Broadcaster Relations Manager for America's Cup Management in respect of the 32nd America's Cup in Valencia, Spain
  • Advised the America's Cup Event Authority on a range of legal matters relating to the 34th America's Cup; including the negotiation/contracting of numerous sponsorship television and online/digital rights deals
  • Head of Legal for an international sports marketing agency that rebranded and exploited the commercial rights to the ATP Tennis Masters Series and ATP Tennis Masters Cup (now known as the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals)
  • Developed and managed the International Swimming Federation's bid/host city procurement process for the FINA World Championships and the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m)
  • Senior Commercial Lawyer for the New Millennium Experience Company, the company responsible for staging the UK's new millennium celebrations at "the Dome" in Greenwich, London
