Will Barnes

Will is a senior associate in the firm’s commercial property team.

He advises commercial, local authority and government clients on property development, acquisitions and disposals, property finance, leasing and subdivision. Will’s experience extends to large scale infrastructure and energy development projects (including wind, solar, geothermal and hydro generation), strategic assets (Crown land, ports & airports) and central city commercial property development. Will has worked in project teams for renewable energy developments throughout his career in New Zealand and overseas.

Will joined the firm in 2018 after spending over five years in the Melbourne and London offices of a large global law firm. Prior to that he worked in the Wellington office of a large New Zealand firm and a New Plymouth firm before that.

  • Auckland Council - $NZ58 million sale of 35 Graham St, Auckland and agreement to develop and lease Asset Plus’ new build $NZ120 million office build in Albany (Council as anchor tenant and development partner – due for completion 2022)
  • Auckland Council and Auckland Transport - redevelopment of Auckland’s waterfront for the 36th America's Cup event in 2021
  • Panuku Development Auckland - disposals and acquisition of land for Auckland Council
  • Auckland Transport - property acquisitions for the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI)
  • New Zealand Carbon Farming - pipeline of land acquisition for planting, and acquisition of forests, for establishing carbon sinks
  • Australian Wind Farms - development of Ararat and Penshurst wind farms (RES Australia) and Portland wind farm (Pacific Hydro) all in Victoria, Australia
  • Contact Energy - acquisition of land rights for the proposed Hauāuru mā raki and Waitahora wind farms and geothermal fluid extraction rights in the central North Island
  • New South Wales Ports – the $AUD5.07 billion acquisition of Ports Botany and Kembla from the NSW Government
  • Brookfield Property Partners – development, pre-letting and funding of 100 Bishopsgate, London (a £1 billion, 37 storey, 93,000 square metre City of London office tower building)
  • Market Tech Plc – the £200 million Camden Lock urban renewal project in London
  • CIMB Trust Capital – the $AUD279 million acquisition of 3 Collins Square, Melbourne and the $AUD93 million acquisition of 50 Pitt Street, Sydney 
  • Deutsche Bank, Wells Fargo and Credit Suisse – finance of various acquisitions of real estate portfolios in central London
