Pro bono

We recognise that accessing legal advice can be difficult for disadvantaged and low-income individuals and groups within our communities.

That’s why we’ve stepped up in 2020 to appoint a dedicated partner to lead our pro bono practice. That’s a first in New Zealand. We believe that pro bono work makes for better lawyers, so all our legal staff are encouraged to undertake pro bono services in their working year.

Led by pro bono partner, Shan Wilson, our pro bono practice is about providing legal assistance in the community for those who are low income or disadvantaged and cannot otherwise access legal advice. We provide our pro bono clients with the same quality of service that we provide every client, either on a free basis or at a substantially reduced fee.

Through our practice we have assisted numerous people and groups, either on a one-off or ongoing basis. A number of our staff attend the Auckland and Wellington Community Legal Centres each year, to assist with the provision of legal advice. We contribute to law reform and policy work on issues affecting low income or disadvantaged members of the community, and are also building a pro bono platform around legal assistance for environmental causes.

For more information or to discuss a pro bono opportunity please contact Shan Wilson.
